Frederick William Townley

William was the second born of the four Townley brothers whose names appear on the Roll of Honour. All were born in West Haddon to parents Frederick Daniel and Florence Elizabeth Lawrence Townley. Frederick had been born in West Haddon, baptised 30/3/1866, whereas Florence was born in Harpole.
William was born on 17/3/1896 and was baptised Frederick William on 3/5/1896. The 1911 Census records him as a 15 year old grocer’s assistant.
The Attestation of William Frederick Townley, aged 19 years 2 months took place on 25/5/1915. He described himself as a Motor Driver. On 28/5/1915 he was posted to Mechanical Transport – MTRASC, as a Private with a service num
ber of 100289. He served in Malta from 18/7/1915 to 12/9/1919 and was placed on the army reserve on 22/10/1919.
His home address on discharge was given as 2 Craven Terrace, Chapelfield, Coventry.

In 1940 William Frederick was living in Milom, Monroe, Michigan. He married Zelma Belle Orbit and died on 27/1/1980 in Brooklyn, Jackson, Michigan. He is buried in Vinemore Cemetery, Edmore, Montcalm County, Michigan. A family member advised he was a superintendant for several regional Ford Motor Company plantsand was a personal friend and masonic brother of Henry Ford.
