George Gurney

GEORGE HENRY GURNEY

The 1901 census shows the Gurney family living in West Haddon.   The entry shows:

Elijah Gurney aged 34, born in Winwick, working as a waggoner, living in Chequers Lane with his wife Mary L, aged 24, born in Yelvertoft.   Living with them were their three children George H aged 6, born 22/2/1895, baptised 5/5/1895, Olive M aged 3 and Alice S aged 11 months.

The 1911 entry shows Elijah and Mary Louisa living at Stafford Lane with George Henry, then aged 16 and working as a farm labourer, his 3 sisters and two brothers.

There is nothing in the military record that links this person to West Haddon but on the balance of probability it would appear he enlisted on 24/8/1914 with the Royal Fusiliers 6th WC, registration number 12238.   He was discharged on 21/5/1917 suffering from “sickness”.

George Henry married Olive Mary Houghton (Born 1897 in Brixworth) in the April-June quarter of 1918, in Brixworth.

George Henry died in March, 1980 aged 85.

The death of Olive Mary his widow  was registered in January, 1991.   She was aged 91.
