Leonard Heygate

In 1911 Leonard William Heygate lived with his family in a twelve roomed dwelling in West Haddon.   The Head of the household, Richard Ralph Heygate was a varnish manufacturer as was one of his sons Gerald Ralph.    Leonard William, the younger son, born on 3rd September, 1889 was then aged twenty one and employed as an Articled Clerk.   Also living in the house was Lizzie Emma, Richard Ralph’s wife, a daughter Margaret Irene, a housemaid and a cook.

I found very few details in respect of the military career of Leonard other than he was a Private with the 1571 Northamptonshire Yeomanry Dragoons but later transferred to the 3/1st Bedfordshire Yeomanry.   Hopefully a visit to the Northamptonshire Regiment Museum will reveal further details.

Leonard married Evelyn Lucy Underwood during the July – September quarter of 1920.   An entry in the Northampton and District telephone directory shows them living at 1 Harday’s Lane, West Haddon.

His father was clearly a man of means.   The Probate at the time of his death read, “HEYGATE, Richard Ralph of Avenue House, West Haddon died 25/8/1923 aged 71.   Probate to Lizzie Emma Heygate widow, Gerald Ralph Heygate varnish and polish manufacturer and Leonard William Heygate farmer.   Effects £10585 1s 5d”.

Perhaps further research will uncover where he farmed.

Leonard William Heygate, living at Rokeby Cottage, West Haddon died in September, 1975 at the age of eighty six.   His widow Evelyn Lucy’s death, aged88, was registered in September, 1980.
